Which birthstones are best for everyday rings?

Each month's first modern birthstone ranked by Mohs scratch hardness (1 is softest, 10 is hardest). Ratings use the low end of the range: 8 or more is excellent, 7 to 7.9 good, 5.5 to 6.9 fair, and below 5.5 delicate. Hardness is not the whole story: toughness, cleavage, and heat sensitivity matter too.

Modern vs traditional birthstones

The U.S. birthstone list was created by American jewelers in 1912. It was updated in 1952 (adding alexandrite, citrine, tourmaline, and zircon), in 2002 (tanzanite for December), and in 2016 (spinel for August). The "traditional" column on this page is the original 1912 list, so it shows which stones were added later.

Lists still differ slightly. This page follows the American Gem Society and GIA, which include bloodstone for March and zircon for December. Jewelers of America lists aquamarine alone for March, drops sardonyx for August, and lists blue topaz instead of zircon for December. The UK and other countries use their own lists.

Meanings and healing claims are folklore and tradition, not proven facts. Hardness values are from gemological references and describe scratch resistance only.

Birthstone and birth flower FAQ

What are the 12 birthstones by month?

The modern birthstones by month are January garnet, February amethyst, March aquamarine or bloodstone, April diamond, May emerald, June pearl, alexandrite, or moonstone, July ruby, August peridot, spinel, or sardonyx, September sapphire, October opal or tourmaline, November topaz or citrine, and December turquoise, zircon, or tanzanite. 6 months have more than one modern birthstone, and each month also has a birth flower. This follows the modern list published by the American Gem Society and GIA; Jewelers of America differs slightly for March, August and December.

Which months have more than one birthstone?

6 months have more than one modern birthstone: March (aquamarine or bloodstone), June (pearl, alexandrite, or moonstone), August (peridot, spinel, or sardonyx), October (opal or tourmaline), November (topaz or citrine), and December (turquoise, zircon, or tanzanite). Extra stones were added over time to give more color and price choices.

What is the rarest birthstone?

There is no single official answer. Alexandrite and tanzanite are commonly cited as among the rarest birthstones: GIA calls fine alexandrite exceptionally rare, tanzanite is commercially mined in only one place on earth (Tanzania's Merelani Hills), and the American Gem Society lists both among gemstones rarer than diamond. Rarity also depends on color, size, and quality within each gem.

Which birthstones are hard enough for everyday rings?

Stones of 7 or more on the Mohs scale handle daily wear best. Among the modern birthstones that is diamond (10), ruby (9), sapphire (9), alexandrite (8.5), spinel (8), topaz (8), aquamarine (7.5 to 8), emerald (7.5 to 8), tourmaline (7 to 7.5), amethyst (7), and citrine (7). Softer stones such as pearl (2.5 to 3), opal (5 to 6.5), and turquoise (5 to 6) scratch more easily, so they are better in pendants, earrings, or protective settings.

What is my birth flower?

January: Carnation and Snowdrop; February: Violet and Primrose; March: Daffodil (jonquil); April: Daisy and Sweet pea; May: Lily of the valley and Hawthorn; June: Rose and Honeysuckle; July: Larkspur and Water lily; August: Gladiolus and Poppy; September: Aster and Morning glory; October: Marigold and Cosmos; November: Chrysanthemum; December: Narcissus (paperwhite) and Holly.
