Traditional vs modern vs official jewelry lists
Traditional (US and UK). Older gift themes recorded in almanacs and encyclopedias. The US list follows the Chicago Public Library, World Almanac, and World Book; the UK list follows Pears Cyclopaedia. They differ for several early years and the UK list adds the 65th, 70th, and 80th.
Modern. A newer US list popularized by retailers. No official body publishes it, and details vary by source.
Official jewelry list. Endorsed by Jewelers of America and other jewelry organizations: a gemstone or metal for each year from 1 to 25, then every fifth year to the 60th. In 1937 the American National Retail Jeweler Association, now Jewelers of America, introduced an expanded gift list. There is no official anniversary color list, so this page shows only the gemstone's own color.

Anniversary gifts FAQ
What is the traditional gift for each anniversary?
The first anniversary gift is paper on the US list (cotton or paper in the UK). The traditional US list runs 1st paper, 2nd cotton, 3rd leather, 4th fruit and flowers, 5th wood, 6th iron, 7th wool and copper, 8th bronze, 9th pottery, 10th tin and aluminum, 11th steel, 12th silk, 13th lace, 14th ivory, and 15th crystal, then 20th china, 25th silver, 30th pearl, 35th coral, 40th ruby, 45th sapphire, 50th gold, 55th emerald, 60th diamond, and 75th diamond and gold. The UK list differs for some years, for example sugar for the 6th and copper for the 9th.
What is the difference between traditional and modern anniversary gifts?
Traditional gifts are the older themes found in almanacs and encyclopedias, such as paper for the 1st and wood for the 5th. Modern gifts are a newer US list popularized by retailers, such as clocks for the 1st and diamond jewelry for the 10th; it is not set by any official body and varies by source. Many couples mix both.
What are the anniversary gemstones by year?
The official jewelry anniversary list endorsed by Jewelers of America is: 1st gold, 2nd garnet, 3rd pearl, 4th blue topaz, 5th sapphire, 6th amethyst, 7th onyx, 8th tourmaline, 9th lapis lazuli, 10th diamond, 11th turquoise, 12th jade, 13th citrine, 14th opal, 15th ruby, 16th peridot, 17th watches, 18th cat's eye (chrysoberyl), 19th aquamarine, 20th emerald, 21st iolite, 22nd spinel, 23rd imperial topaz, 24th tanzanite, 25th silver, 30th pearl, 35th emerald, 40th ruby, 45th sapphire, 50th gold, 55th alexandrite, and 60th diamond. It has no entries between the five-year milestones after the 25th or after the 60th.
What anniversary is gold, silver, ruby, or diamond?
The 25th is the silver anniversary, the 40th ruby, the 50th golden, and the 60th diamond. The full milestone names are 25th silver, 30th pearl, 40th ruby, 45th sapphire, 50th golden, 55th emerald, 60th diamond, and 70th platinum. Gold is also the official jewelry for the 1st anniversary, and modern lists give gold jewelry for the 14th.
What do you give for anniversaries without a traditional gift?
Years 16-19 and 21-24 and most years after the 25th have no traditional gift. Use the official jewelry gemstone where there is one (16th peridot, 17th watches, 18th cat's eye (chrysoberyl), 19th aquamarine, 21st iolite, 22nd spinel, 23rd imperial topaz, and 24th tanzanite), the modern gift, or a theme from the nearest milestone, such as the 25th (silver) or the 30th (pearl) for the 26th.
